More research has been published proving gender-bending’ chemicals, which leach from human products into oceans and rivers, can have a significant impact on fishes ability to breed. The study has important implications for understanding the impacts of these chemicals.

The organic food industry is going from strength to strength with the recent growth pushing the annual sales to almost $1 Billion a year in Australia, as a new report show more Australians are preferring the chemical free lifestyle.

The traditional supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths and IGA have accounted for more market share, selling 60% of Australia’s organic food, according to a report commissioned by the Biological Farmers of Australia.

This trend is defying the global recession as the the sales of organic wine, beer, cosmetics, and feed stocks grew.   The big growth in sales of 61% was distributed over only a small 4% increase in the number of producers.

As expected the biggest barrier to further grow was the price premium of the organic products.  Although with the strong growth it should help economies of scale help reduce the price in the longer term.

Australian Sharon Cohrs is 38 years old and a breast cancer survivor. In April/May 2009, just 9 months after she finished chemotherapy and three months after reconstruction surgery, Sharon and her husband climbed Mt. Barunste in Nepal which stands at 7129m. They also climbed Mera Peak as a warm up mountain which stands at 6480m. It was a huge challenge as she wasn’t sure how her body would cope with the altitude, or whether she had the strength required in her left arm due to lymph node removal, the increased risk of lymphoedema, and generally the physical and mental demands required for climbing a mountain.

Why is Sharon climbing mountains? To raise much needed funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Her goal was to climb four mountains, the last being Everest. Doing so will make her the first breast cancer survivor in the world to summit Mt Everest!
