In a groundbreaking effort to educate the American public about healthy eating, US First Lady Michelle Obama recently began an organic garden on the south lawn of the White House.
With the help of local elementary school students, she prepared the soil for the first working kitchen garden seen at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s ‘victory garden’ during World War II.
Michelle Obama hopes the garden, containing over 50 varieties of homegrown produce, will help people to make healthier food choices by eating new and different fresh fruits and vegetables.
The First Lady has joined a groundswell of home gardeners reverting to the age-old idea of the kitchen garden providing healthier food and a way to save money into the bargain.
