There are so many ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ skincare companies out there. Luckily as this niche market is growing so is consumer knowledge about ‘greenwashing’.
Greenwashing is the practice of claiming a product is organic, natural, or better for the environment than competing products without providing evidence.
A very well known ‘natural’ skincare company recently got busted for greenwashing by the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission for leaving off ingredients that cause skin irritations and misleading consumers about the quantities of herbs and oils in their products. But what is even more concerning is that there are now 3rd party certifying bodies popping up everywhere with very relaxed definitions of ‘organic’. This means that a product failing to qualify for the Australian Certified Organic certification can go to another certifying body, pay them some money and get a ‘certified organic’ label on their product.
